On March 3rd<\/sup>, 2014 my friend, Detective John Hobbs with the Phoenix Police Department\u2019s Fugitive Apprehension and Investigations Detail (FAID) was shot and killed while affecting an arrest of a violent offender.\u00a0 The suspect was able to shoot both John and his partner just as they exited their vehicle.\u00a0 John was struck in the chest.\u00a0 Despite his fatal wound, John returned fire with his carbine, striking the suspect numerous times, ending the fight.\u00a0 John was aware of the severity of his injury and was able to relay a final message to his friend and fellow detective at the scene.\u00a0 Johns partner, also seriously injured, recovered and eventually was my squad mate and friend on SAU. \u00a0He is also an unbelievably courageous man.<\/p>\nI will not go into the tragedy of such a loss.\u00a0 We all know and feel these things.\u00a0 However, I will highlight the determination, skill and sheer ferocity shown that day.\u00a0 Warriors often imagine and sometimes discuss their own final stand.\u00a0 Johns came to fruition that day.\u00a0 He did not faulter.\u00a0 Like a true warrior, once the violence was done, he turned his final thoughts to his family.<\/p>\n
Some will read this and feel sad, while others will read this and feel something else. The latter are my brothers and sisters.<\/p>\n
In effort to maintain the memory of that day and to perpetuate the warrior culture, TruKinetics will give one free spot to an officer who has demonstrated outstanding character and skill in the performance of their job duties.\u00a0 This will be entirely peer driven with the selection of the recipient chosen by TruKinetics.<\/p>\n
